Many people have a fear of going to the dentist, and this anxiety can make it harder for them to get the treatment they need. You may be in the same boat, but sedation dentistry is a great option to help you feel more at ease. It’s designed to allow you to relax while in your provider’s chair. However, while it’s a beneficial choice for many, it’s not always a good fit. It’s important you’re a good candidate first, so here’s why a patient may not be able to get it.

So, What Is Sedation Dentistry?

In short, sedation dentistry is designed to help those with dental-related anxiety and fears. Its primary goal is to give you a relaxing feeling rather than make you fall asleep, as you do with general anesthesia. Those who are severely afraid, have a sensitive gag reflex, and have trouble sitting still can make getting safe and effective treatments difficult, so this option can be helpful in calming nerves.

Not only that, but there are multiple types of sedation dentistry as well. Laughing gas (nitrous oxide), oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation are all varying levels of strength. They have their own pros and cons, which your dentist considers while they pick the right one for you during any given treatment.

What Would Impact Someone’s Eligibility for Sedation Dentistry?

That being said, while it’s generally considered safe for most patients, there are a few things that can make sedation dentistry a less-than-ideal option, such as:

  • Pregnancy: It’s often recommended that those who are expecting avoid unnecessary medications to reduce the risk of issues in their developing fetus, which includes dental sedation.
  • Some Allergies: A few people may have allergies to the sedatives used, so be sure to let your dentist know of any you have.
  • Certain Medications: Some medications that you may take shouldn’t be mixed with sedation. Let your provider know about anything you’re on, whether it’s prescribed or over-the-counter.
  • Specific Medical Conditions: Respiratory disease, chronic bronchitis, and sleep apnea may cause some complications, meaning they’ll likely affect your eligibility.
  • Alcohol Intake: It’s important you don’t drink alcohol before your appointment with dental sedation, as it can cause problems like trouble breathing or lower blood pressure.
  • Stuffy Nose: If you are getting laughing gas, then nasal congestion can get in the way of it. You may not be able to breathe in the nitrous oxide, meaning you won’t feel its effects.

Sedation dentistry is a great tool to help people with their dental anxiety, but it’s not right for everyone. Your dentist will want to make sure it’s a safe option for you; that way, you have the best experience possible with it.
