After you get your dental implants placed, you may be looking forward to getting good use out of them. You’ll have a stable bite that lets you enjoy a wide range of food once again. Not only that, but they look and feel just like natural teeth! With a full smile, you’ll feel confident showing them off. However, should you worry about this tooth replacement becoming stained? Here’s what you should know.

So, Can My Dental Implant Become Stained?

Your dental implant is made of three separate parts: a post, an abutment, and a restoration. The latter makes up the visible portion you see when you flash your grin. It can be a crown, bridge, or denture, but they are often crafted out of ceramic or porcelain. These materials are nonporous, so they are more stain-resistant than natural enamel! Not only that, but they even have a protective glaze over them.

That being said, your restoration isn’t immune to discoloration. Over time, the outer layer can get rough, making it look dull or prone to this dental flaw. This can happen due to a couple of different things, such as:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Abrasive toothpaste
  • Overindulging in acidic foods
  • Chewing hard objects, like pens, ice, or even hard candy

If you start to notice any stains, then your dentist may be able to polish and repair the restoration, but getting a replacement is sometimes necessary instead.

What Can I Do to Avoid Any Stains on My Dental Implant?

Although your dental implant can be resistant to discoloration, it can still happen if you do any of the habits above! To help ensure your full smile stays looking great, consider following these simple tips:

  • Follow proper dental hygiene. By brushing twice a day and flossing once, you can remove harmful bacteria from your mouth that can threaten your tooth replacement.
  • Use non-abrasive, fluoride toothpaste with a soft-bristle toothbrush. To find the former, look for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) Seal of Acceptance!
  • Stop smoking or chewing tobacco, as it causes stains, but it may also increase your risk of implant failure.
  • Have dark-colored foods and drinks in moderation. Coffee, red wine, tea, and berries can cause discoloration. Limit how often you have them or rinse with water after enjoying them!

Keep these easy tips in mind as you revel in the benefits of your dental implants! Adding them to your routine can help keep your smile strong while keeping it bright for years to come.
